Women and girls are more likely to be exposed to gender-based violence and sexual harassment in education and academia than their male counterparts. Also, LGBTQ+, ethnic minorities and persons with handicaps and people with multiple disadvantages are often targets of different forms of violence and discrimination. This may play an important role in the decisions that these groups of people make about becoming a researcher and staying in academia.
UniSAFE is joining GENDERACTIONplus in its campaign on the occasion of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science to raise awareness about the importance of creating safe, respectful, and inclusive environments in academia for all.

Very simple! Share in your Tweets and posts on other social media between 11.2. and 17.2.2023 under #SafeAcademia, for example:
- a statement about why it is necessary to address the issue;
- what has been done or is planned at your institution to ensure #SafeAcademia;
- and/or join and share the information about your (or your institution´s) endorsement of a call for action to end gender-based violence launched within the framework of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in November 2022. Help us also to spread the word about the call by tagging/nominating 3 of your friends or colleagues who you think would like to endorse the call and also ask them to forward this request to another 3!

What is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science?
On 22 December 2015, the General Assembly established an annual International Day to recognize women and girls’ critical role in science and technology. The IDWGS celebrated on 11 February is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. This Day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
